Major solar project being proposed for Sables-Spanish Rivers Township

A major solar project proposal for Sables-Spanish Rivers Township has gone through the first step, council approval.
The company, Potentia, which is part of the Power Corporation of Canada out of Montreal, made a presentation to Sables-Spanish Rivers Township Council to look at the long-term solar project.
Spokesperson David Biggar says they are starting the process of building a large solar farm that would provide up to 150 jobs during construction, would be in place for between 25 to 30 years and provide up to 200 megawatts to the power grid.
The company needed council approval to begin the process of doing site assessments, environmental impacts, and other legal requirements. Biggar adds the work could take up to five years to complete.
If all the initial requirements are met, capital costs for the entire project, including installation and bringing it online would require around $150 million in investments.
Council passed a motion to provide Potentia municipal support to apply for the project to move forward.
The motion also stipulates it would only be built on municipally owned land not designated as prime agricultural property under the Official Plan.
Biggar will now begin the application process and report back to council.
