It is estimated around 300 people attended a protest yesterday with concerns about herbicide aerial spraying of the North Shore Forest.
According to the release, Tek Elders from Serpent River First Nation organized the protest on Highway 17 at the trading post.
In their statement, they say the spraying is damaging to the environment and there has not been enough public consultation.
The Ministry of Natural Resources announced the spraying around four weeks ago.
According to MNR spokesperson Darren Tree, as part of their ongoing efforts to regenerate and protect Ontario’s forests, selected stands on the Northshore Forest throughout the North Shore Corridor will be sprayed with herbicide to control competing vegetation, starting on or about August 18th.
However, First Nations, environmentalists and others concerned with the spraying do not want it taking place, especially if glyphosate is used.
Traffic was slowed down for approximately two hours along the stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway.
The Tek Elders say another protest is already in the works.
The project description and project plan for the herbicide project is available electronically for inspection by contacting Northshore Forest Inc. and on the Natural Resources Information Portal.
