Since Public Health Sudbury & Districts reported a measles infection last Tuesday (July 22), it has been investigating the source in order to prevent further spread.
Dr. M. Mustafa Hirji, Acting Medical Officer of Health, says the agency has identified an initial, previously undetected introduction of measles into the area seven weeks ago linked to the broader measles outbreak occurring throughout North America.
He says Public Health has uncovered an additional 39 measles infections in its service area, the majority of which has been resolved.
Dr Hirji adds over 95% of measles infections in Ontario have been in those not fully vaccinated and the overwhelming majority of infections they are seeing locally align with that trend.
He encourages everyone to be vaccinated with at least two doses for measles, mumps and rubella.
