Elliot Lake council has approved a staff recommendation to set a building permit fee of 1.1 percent of the project value, for large projects not specifically covered by the city’s existing fee schedule.
Chief Building Official William McCaffery says the value of construction will be determined by a written cost estimate by a licensed contractor or design professional or his office.
McCaffery says, for example a $3.5 million institutional renovation building permit fee would be $38,500 or a $1.8 million cladding brick window repair HVAC replacement on multi-storey residential building permit fees would then be $19,800.
He pointed out the current fee structure would only allow the municipality to charge a set fee of a few thousand dollars, but the new fee would align the city with other municipalities
McCaffery emphasized the existing building permit fee structure will not change, and the existing fee schedule covers “most construction – like houses, new commercial buildings, additions, detached garages, decks, and more.
Council approved the recommendation.
