With a big drop in International students, Cambrian College is projecting a major drop in revenue leading to the decision to suspend 10 programs.
According to the release, the facility is projecting a $1.4M deficit after a decade of surpluses.
International students were regarded as a higher source of revenue often with them being charged higher tuition rates, but when their numbers exploded and increased domestic pressures, such as housing, the federal government put legislation in place to reduce the number of applicants.
The suspensions were approved at last week’s Cambrian’s board of governors meeting where the 2025-26 budget was also approved with a projected deficit of $1.4 million, the first in a decade.
The 2025-2026 budget is predicting revenue of $116.8 million with a decrease of $40.1 million from the previous year.
Of that $40.1 million, the decrease in international student tuition accounts for a full $16 million.
Seven full-time faculty are affected by the suspensions, but the college hoping to be able to reassign them to other programs.
