Hughes petitions federal government provide funding for shortfall for Wiikwemkoong Elders’ Home

A Manitoulin Island project to replace a long-term care facility needs financial assistance.
Carol Hughes, the MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, tabled a petition in the House of Commons this week asking the federal government to help make up a funding shortfall to build a replacement Elders’ home facility in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory.
She says petitioners note they have received commitments of $30 million from the Ontario government, $7.5 million from CMHC, and have been able to raise $2.5 million locally.
Hughes says current senior’s residence was first built 52 years ago and has reached the natural end of its life, leaving the community with a degree of uncertainty as to whether the project can be completed before the current seniors’ home closes its doors.
Hughes adds the federal government has previously stated they have no intention of assisting with the funding shortfall, but she hopes voicing the concerns of constituents from Wiikwemkoong will push them to reconsider.
