The townships of Nairn & Hyman and Baldwin are inviting neighbouring municipalities to attend a special joint meeting of councils next week to focus on the proposed plan to transport naturally occurring radioactive waste called NORM to the decommissioned Agnew Lake Mine Site.
Nairn & Hyman Mayor Amy Macey says the meeting will include a panel of experts from various provincial ministries and environmental organizations to provide information about the plans and to also allow stakeholders to ask questions and voice their concerns.
She says the townships only learned about the process in late June.
Macey says the decision to transport and deposit NORM has far-reaching implications for the environment, public health, and safety of local communities and the decision was made without consultation with any municipalities and First Nations located near Agnew Lake or along the Highway 17 corridor.
The public and neighbouring community leaders are encouraged to attend the meeting next Wednesday, September 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the Nairn Community Centre. (64 McIntyre Street, Nairn Centre)
The two councils met during an emergency meeting on August 19th, and passed a resolution that was sent to Premier Doug Ford and several other Provincial Ministers asking to immediately halt the project until there is a clear line of communication established with local municipalities and First Nations to ensure local voices are heard, concerns addressed, and that the planning and execution of this project is transparent.
