United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishinaabe Police called for a shelter in place on Monday following issuing a search warrant for a local residence in M’Chigeeng First Nation.
In a statement, Police Chief James Killeen says when the warrant was issued and officers went to execute it, they took a female into custody, but a male refused to surrender himself to police.
Killeen says officers believed he was to be armed, so a shelter was put in place for residents living at the complex on Tikmeg Road with many of them asked to leave for safety reasons.
He adds the shelter in place was removed yesterday after the male finally surrendered to police, but due to extensive damage to the complex, residents cannot return to their homes until the police complete their investigation.
