East Algoma OPP investigating hate crime/mischief occurrence

East Algoma OPP is investigating the destruction of a PRIDE flag at a North Shore corridor school.

Constable Bev Gauthier says on May 9th, police investigated the destruction of the flag at Central Algoma Secondary School in Desbarats that occurred around 2 am.

She says officers retrieved video footage and an individual could be seen lowering the PRIDE flag, ripping it off the pole, setting it on fire, and then running away.

Gauthier says the person appears to be male, wearing a dark hoodie and may have used an accelerant to set the flag on fire.

She adds this Tuesday, two typed notes were turned into school staff with hateful messaging towards LGBTQ2+ community.

She says the investigation is ongoing.

If you have information related to this occurrence or know of anyone who has expressed extreme views about the LGBTQ2+ community, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or your nearest police authority.
