Cambrian College introduces Registered Nurse Prescribing Training

Cambrian College is introducing training that will allow registered nurses to prescribe some medications.

Janice Clarke, Cambrian’s Vice-President Academic, says the Registered Nurse Prescribing Program is for nurses currently working in the profession, who are in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario and have accumulated at least 3,900 hours of practice in nursing within the last five years.

She says upon completion of the program, registered nurses working in certain settings, such as long-term care, will be able to prescribe some medications related to vaccination and immunization, travel health, allergic reaction, topical wound care and more.

Clarke adds it consists of two modular courses that qualifying registered nurses can complete online, plus 150 hours of placement in a health care setting with Cambrian being one of seven colleges in Ontario to form a partnership to offer the program.
