The former site of AB Ellis Public School in Espanola will be much more than just parking lots.
Rainbow District School Board communication director, Nicole Charette, says the final phase of the Espanola revitalization project has begun with more than 100 parking spaces being created for staff, students and guests of the joint AB Ellis and Espanola High schools.
She adds now that the asphalt is complete, the remaining areas of the property will be sodded and include a soccer field and basketball courts to promote healthy living.
Charette says the trees on the south side will be a green space for a community garden and once the design plans have been completed, the public will be asked for their input, especially in incorporating the AB Ellis original plaque into the design.
She says Prosperi Construction was awarded the contract for the $1.7-million project fully funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
Charette says the project is expected to be completed in late fall.
