Newly formed Elliot Lake Historical Society planning major collection/membership drive

A new status with the city of Elliot Lake and a membership drive are expected to help the newly formed Elliot Lake Historical Society begin work on a major collection.

Chair Marie Murphy-Foran says the city has agreed to act as a sponsor for the newly formed society, so donations will be considered a tax deduction.

She says that will clear the way to host fundraisers with a membership drive now underway at $10 per person to start building funds for such projects as the major collection.

Murphy-Foran adds says the collection will focus on the mining history of the city prior to being established in 1955 through to the 1990s when the mines were decommissioned.

She says the society has been getting calls from individuals who have historical items that might be of interest, so they are hoping to have an exhibit ready to celebrate the city’s 70th anniversary in 2025.

She adds they are also looking for people who can help them upgrade the group’s website and digitize the material that will be gathered.

Foran adds the members also agreed to hold general meetings on the second Wednesday at the Mount Dufour ski chalet at 7 p.m.

The next meeting is tentatively set for April 12th.
