The Elliot Lake Ice Fishing Derby is back in a big way

Thousands of dollars have been raised for the Elliot Lake Ice Fishing Derby with more coming in before the big event this Saturday.

Steve Antunes, the city’s Economic Manager says the derby is returning following the hiatus during the pandemic with nearly $40,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs.

Antunes adds as of yesterday, they are sitting at 320 entries with more expected over the next couple of days.

Antunes says of those entries, 60% are from outside of Elliot Lake which has a big economic impact with participants staying in the city, shopping and eating at local restaurants.

He adds through the exploreelliotlake.com initiative, they are trying to promote the city’s tourism assets, and ice fishing is certainly one of many great reasons to visit Elliot Lake.

Antunes adds tickets are still available through the city’s website or by dropping by the municipal front desk.

There is also a licensed post event at Collins hall, which is only open to participants, where the top 10 winners will be announced, door prizes will be handed out and anglers can talk about the one that got away.

Staff is on hand to assist anglers as through the derby and at the post-event at Collins Hall.

Antunes adds there are also prizes for the top 10 fish plus other great door prizes.
