Driver impaired by gasoline fumes has altercation with officer

Having an open container of gasoline in a vehicle has netted a Kitchener man several charges.

East Algoma OPP Constable Bev Gauthier says on police noticed a car travelling at a high speed on Highway 17 on Saturday and eventually brought it to a stop.

She says while speaking to the driver, the officer was overwhelmed with the smell of gasoline fumes finding a tote on the rear passenger seat.

She says the tote was nearly full, with the lid not secure and gasoline being spilt all over the interior.

She adds the fumes were strong and it was determined the driver was impaired with becoming agitated and assaultive towards the officer when told the gas could not be transported in that manner.

Gauthier says a 33-year-old man from Kitchener has been charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving, insecure load, assault in resisting arrest and unsafe operation of a vehicle.

She says the officers determined the vehicle was unsafe due to the spillage, so the plates were seized, and it was also towed.

Gauthier adds the man is to appear in Elliot Lake court on April 6th.
