Talks continue involving Robinson-Huron Treaty annuities case

Officials say reaching a settlement outside of the courtroom continues to be the goal in the Robinson-Huron Treaty annuities case.

Litigation was put on hold earlier this month to allow for all parties to come to the table for two weeks of negotiations.

On Jan. 30, Canada, Ontario and the 21 Robinson Huron Treaty First Nations, which include Nipissing First Nation, sought a further adjournment to continue the negotiations.

“In the spirit of reconciliation, Canada, Ontario and the 21 Robinson Huron Treaty First Nations will continue to work together at the negotiation table to try to reach a negotiated outcome outside of the courts,” reads an update on social media. “While our negotiations remain confidential, we will be sure to provide updates to interested parties as key milestones are reached in the process.”

The Robinson Huron Treaty Litigation Fund earlier announced former senator Murray Sinclair is serving as mediator.

The final stage of the process deals with the amount of compensation owed to beneficiaries under the treaty.
