SPORTS Elliot Lake swimmers compete

This past weekend, The Elliot Lake Aquatic Club sent three swimmers to the Murray Drudge Invitational at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

Club spokesperson and competitor, Avery Stirling, says she, Emma Young, and Ethan Young all made the finals in their various events at the competition.

She adds not only was that an accomplishment both Emma and Ethan came home with personal bests despite having to dry train over the last few months since the local pool has been shut down.

These three and other club members have been resilient and continue to train as best they can, says Stirling. “ELAC has dryland three days a week and access to an endless pool in the community twice a week.

“The swimmers have also been traveling to Espanola once a week to swim in a ‘real’ pool.”

She says this is the fourth meet that ELAC has attended this season to garner more pool time and racing experience, even when the athletes may not be at their best, but emphasizes the training seems to be paying off.

Stirling achieved 100% season best times, made finals in the 200 freestyles, and placed second in the 800 freestyles.

Emma Young made finals in the 100 backstroke and 100 individual medleys, placing third and second respectively. She also shaved almost three seconds off her 200 backstrokes.

Ethan Young made the finals in the 200 freestyle and was able to drop ten seconds from his previous 100 butterfly best.

The team hopes to continue this success and hard work, adds Stirling.
