A survey of the fish stock in the Spanish River has not been done in many years, so the Spanish Harbour Area of Concern in Recovery proponents is conducting an updated survey.
Back in 1983, toxic sewage discharged from the then E. B. Eddy paper mill in Espanola destroyed the ecosystem from Webbwood Falls at the mill downriver to the North Channel of Lake Huron.
Rehabilitation work began and in 1999, the Spanish Harbour was re-designated as an Area of Concern in Recovery, which means all actions had been taken to help restore the eco-systems and water quality and recovery would continue naturally along the waterway.
Representatives were at the Massey Fair this weekend asking the public to fill out the survey, which includes types and sizes of fish caught, what type of fish they eat, and their general opinion on the health of the river.
