9-11 mastermind is killed
“Justice has been delivered.”
Those are the words of U-S President Joe Biden, as he announced the death of al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri.
Biden says al-Zawahri was killed in a U-S drone strike on a residence in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Sunday.
He was the mastermind behind the 9-11 attacks on the United States and he succeeded to the leadership of the terrorist group after the killing of its leader, Osama bin Laden by U-S forces in 2011.
Biden says he hopes al-Zawahri’s death brings one more measure of closure to the families of the victims of 9-11.
The P.C. debate
At this point, the third and last federal Conservative leadership debate is still on for tomorrow evening…..even though two of the five candidates have opted out.
Pierre Poilievre and Leslyn Lewis say they won’t be attending.
Poilievre says he’s concentrating on getting out the vote, while Lewis is questioning the need for a third debate if it doesn’t raise issues like abortion.
Leadership candidates have been told they’ll be fined 50 thousand dollars if they don’t show up.
The party is to announce the results of the membership vote on September 10th.
Shipping out Ukraine grain
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says it’s too early to celebrate.
A ship loaded with grain left the Ukrainian port of Odesa yesterday, the first since the Russian invasion began on February 24th.
Zelensky says Ukrainians should wait to see if more vessels are allowed to leave, with Russia’s agreement to open ports to the shipments.
Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of products such as wheat and corn, and its ports’ blockade has helped increase food prices around the world.
Kentucky rain and flooding
At least 37 people are known dead and hundreds are still unaccounted for, after flash floods in Kentucky.
Heavy rain that began last Thursday has inundated towns and cities across the state.
Roads are blocked and bridges have been destroyed, making it difficult to get rescue crews into the affected areas.
Forecasters say more rain is on the way for today.
