Elliot Lake moves ahead with transferring land to SRFN

The larger community in Elliot Lake is supportive of selling a parcel of land to Serpent River First Nation in the spirit of reconciliation.

The move is being supported by both Elliot Lake Pride, which would like to see a two-spirit centre built on the site, and ELNOS, the local business corporation.

North Ontario Pride representative, Douglas Elliot says if reconciliation is the goal, then the land could be put to good use with the building of an innovative centre for two-spirited and other people.

ELNOS general manager, William Elliot, says the plan to sell the former MNR site north of the city to Serpent River First Nation is a good one, and one that can have concrete benefits for both communities.

Council listened to the presentations and in the end, agreed to move ahead with the sale of the property on Highway 108 in the interests of economic and community development, and in the interests of reconciliation.
