Returning land for development to a First Nation

Elliot Lake councillors will discuss the transfer of land to Serpent River First Nation for future development of the waterfront and rural properties.

City CAO Daniel Gagnon will make a presentation to the council tonight suggesting they transfer the land north of the city to the First Nation in the spirit of reconciliation and future development.

Gagnon says the council will review the proposal, which would be based on revenue sharing, a joint governing body, respect of First Nation rights and working together on the legal options and framework that could be put in place.

He explains that the land was transferred to the Crown when the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests decommissioned the site in 2003.

Gagnon adds if the council decides to move ahead with the project, it could be considered a pilot project for other municipalities in similar situations in Ontario.
