Archibald back in charge
The Assembly of First Nations has wrapped up its annual meeting in Vancouver, with the national chief Roseanne Archibald back in charge.
Delegates rejected the executive’s decision last month to suspend her, and have voted in favour of holding a forensic audit of the AFN’s expenses over the past decade.
Archibald had argued she was suspended because she wanted to investigate corruption in the
organization.
Delegates also agreed to hold a third-party investigation into a climate of toxicity and bullying at the AFN.
British Pm Johnson resigns
Boris Johnson is coming under fire from those in his own party after he announced his resignation yesterday.
Johnson insists he’ll continue until a new Conservative leader is chosen, but that could be as late as
October.
Several cabinet members have told him he must step down immediately, to avoid further damage to the party.
Johnson finally agreed to quit after more than 50 cabinet ministers and parliamentary officials
resigned their posts this week, in reaction to the latest scandal to engulf the Prime Minister.
Former Japanese PM assassinated
Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died after being shot during a campaign event near Osaka.
Abe was hit twice, reportedly by a man carrying a homemade weapon.
Japan has some of the strictest gun ownership laws in the world.
The 41-year-old suspect hasn’t yet told police his motive for the attack.
COVID-19 surge slow in Ontario
Test positivity for COVID-19 is above ten percent for the first time since spring – and Ontario is also experiencing another increase in hospitalizations because of the virus.
But Ontario’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, says the increase is slow.
Dr. Moore says they have been monitoring the B-A55 variant of Omicron, adding our province entered the seventh wave in mid-June.
Despite that fact, he remains optimistic, saying this wave is growing much more slowly, and shouldn’t impact our health care system like that of the two waves earlier this year.
To help combat hospitalizations and severe cases of COVID-19, Dr. Moore is calling on the millions of Ontarians who still haven’t received their booster shots to get them.
Moore adds fourth shots could be available for all those 18 to 59 starting next week.
VIA rail on strike notice
VIA Rail says passenger rail service will be halted starting next Monday if 2,400 of its employees go on strike.
UNIFOR has issued a strike notice on behalf of on-board service staff, sales agents, and customer service personnel if a new contract isn’t reached by then.
The union says job security is the main issue.
Its members voted 99 percent in favour of a walkout late last month.
