New area code for north-eastern Ontario

A new telephone area code is about to start in the north-east.

The new 683 area code will be introduced on Saturday – joining the 705 and 249 area codes.

The Telecommunications Alliance says the introduction of 683 – which is happening gradually – is in response to the increasing demand for phone numbers.

The alliance says it will ensure residents and businesses continue to have enough numbers to meet future demand.

After Saturday, residents and businesses requesting a new phone number may receive one with the new area code.
