Maplegate hosts fun day and unveils signage

Maplegate, the women’s shelter in Elliot Lake, hosted a fun day this past weekend and a celebration of its new signage.

Theresa Hiuser, the interim executive director for The Elliot Lake Women’s Group, says the unveiling was held to demonstrate to the community that they plan to be a part of the city support structure for a long time.

She points out the group has been part of Elliot Lake for 40 years and oversees the women’s shelter, as well as Larry’s Place geared to men.

Some shelters choose not to publicize where they are located, but she adds her team feels that it’s more beneficial for everyone in the community to know where they are, and that the community should have no shame for anyone who needs their services and/or access to their resources.
