The GLOBAL REPORT – gunman shot near elementary school in Toronto

Gunman killed in Toronto
Toronto police have shot and killed a man following a confrontation near an elementary school in the suburb of Scarborough.
Police were called after reports a man armed with a rifle was seen near the school.
Two responding officers opened fire after a “confrontation” with the man.
Schools in the area went into lockdown, with students and staff hiding under their desks.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in.
The incident comes just days after an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at a school in Uvalde (you-VAL-dee), Texas, killing 19 students and two teachers.

Soccer game cancelled against Iran
Canada’s national soccer team has cancelled a “friendly” match against Iran set for next month in
Vancouver.
The June 5th game was considered a warm-up for the World Cup later this year.
Canada Soccer says the geopolitical implications of the match had become divisive, so the decision was taken to cancel the match.
The game had come under heavy criticism from the families of those killed when Ukrainian Airlines Flight 752 was shot down by Iranian missiles while departing Tehran in January of 2020.
All 176 people on board were killed, including 85 Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
Iran says it’s seeking ten million dollars in damages from Canada Soccer for breaking its contract.

Intensified fighting
Ukrainian officials say fighting has intensified around the eastern city of Severodonetsk as Russia steps up efforts to take control of the key transportation hub.
The city is one of the last areas of Luhansk province in the Donbas still under Ukrainian
control.
Russian separatists have been operating in the area since 2014.
The Ukrainian governor in the region says troops are retreating to prepared defensive positions around the city.
