New long-term bed facilities for Sagamok and Serpent River

St. Joseph’s General Hospital Elliot Lake along with Sagamok and Serpent River First Nations has received word that both their Campus of Care projects have been approved.

That means more long-term beds will be available for Indigenous people in need.

In partnership with the hospital, Sagamok-Anishnabek First Nation will construct a 16-bed facility in Massey for Indigenous residents as part of a campus of care.

Another 16-bed long-term care home will be built in Serpent River First Nation, also in partnership with the hospital.

Sagamok First Nation Chief Alan Ozawanimki says they recognized the need for additional LTC beds. He’s said he’s pleased to hear it will provide a complete continuum of community support services located close to home.

Ogimma Brent Bissaillion for Serpent River First Nation says the community strives to create quality, high level of care for Elders, and caregivers. He adds the announcement is a commitment to ensure that they provide the highest level of care; and will be able to deliver on that care. “Hopefully, this will be a model of reconciliation for all of us, as we move forward together, in creating a stronger quality of life for Elders and Grandparents.”

Hospital CEO Jeremy Stevenson noted that the development of these long-term care home partnerships is another valuable step towards helping to reduce waitlists while providing our seniors the necessary care they deserve within their communities, close to their families.
