Our PM visits Ukraine PM
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a surprise visit to Ukraine yesterday, meeting with the country’s president in the capital of Kyiv.
Trudeau promised Volodymyr Zelensky that Canada will continue to support his nation.
Zelensky wants Canada to press its allies to deliver more weapons and military supplies so Ukraine can continue the battle.
Trudeau also officially reopened the Canadian embassy in Kyiv, which was closed just before the Russian invasion began in late February.
Russia colours conflict
Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country is fighting a war against “Nazism” in its invasion of
Ukraine.
Speaking during annual celebrations marking the defeat of Germany in the Second World War, Putin adds Russia is battling NATO as well, calling its plans to expand its membership a threat to his nation’s security.
However, he hasn’t announced any further measures to expand the conflict.
Ukrainian officials are urging people to heed air raid warnings.
They’re expecting an increase in Russian attacks to mark the day.
Most civilians evacuated from the Ukraine steel plant
Ukrainian officials are confirming that 60 people were killed in the bombing of a school in eastern Ukraine on the weekend.
The school had been used as a shelter for about 90 people when it was hit by a Russian bomb on Saturday.
Meantime, the leader of the Ukrainian troops still holed up in a massive steel plant in the southern port city of Mariupol is pleading for an evacuation of the wounded.
An estimated 500 injured soldiers are trapped in the ruins, as Russia continues its attempts to eliminate the last pocket of resistance in the city.
Officials say all remaining women, children, and the elderly who were sheltering at the plant have now been evacuated.
Explosion in Cuba
Cuban officials say 31 people are known dead after a powerful explosion tore through a luxury hotel in Havana’s old quarter on Friday.
Rescue crews and sniffer dogs continue working through the rubble, seeking more victims.
The hotel was closed for renovations, so no foreign tourists were present.
Most of the victims are thought to be construction workers and employees preparing for its reopening.
A gas leak is thought to be the cause.
