Project Lifesaver coming to Espanola and Manitoulin

With the support of Domtar, the Manitoulin Detachment OPP and Manitoulin Northshore Victim Services is introducing Project Lifesaver to Espanola and Manitoulin Island in partnership with North Shore Search and Rescue.

OPP Constable Tessa Kasch says Project Lifesaver is a radio frequency-based tracking system and is for people of all ages who are high-risk, vulnerable persons.

She says users must tend to “wander” and have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, Autism, Down syndrome or other forms of cognitive delay.

Victim services Executive Director, Tanya Wall says North Shore Search and Rescue Group has been working on the initiative for years.

Wall adds clients wear a personalized wristband that emits a unique tracking signal so when caregivers notify police a person is missing, police and the search unit can begin the tracking process immediately.

She adds as each wristband has a unique radio frequency, the team can positively locate and identify the person who has wandered away.
