Donations pour in for Espanola trail project

The Espanola Legion has donated to assist with trail development in town.

Members of the Espanola Royal Canadian Legion Branch #39 were at the Black Creek Snow-Sho Trail yesterday to present a cheque to the enthusiastic supporters of the trail.

The $2,500 will go towards the development of a new branch of the trail system to meet at another entrance along Penage Lake Road.

Trail developer Dennis Lendrum says his employer, Veterans Transportation, has also donated and will be providing buses to bring school children out on field trips to the site.

Espanola council has also given its tentative approval to a $3,000 donation to the Espanola Game & Fish Protective Association, which oversees the trail and install an environmentally friendly washroom at the site for six months, but final approval will have to wait since the funding is part of the 2022 draft municipal budget.

Talks are now underway to finalize the document and move forward into 2022 projects.

The town is also in the process of creating a new position to hire an individual as Community and Recreation Manager who will be delegated the job to catalogue and develop a comprehensive trail development plan as one of their first tasks.
