Espanola woman working on changes to help domestic violence victims

An Espanola woman who has escaped domestic abuse feels a Domestic Abuse Registry would help women and men alike.

Amelia Newton says she has started a petition for an online Domestic Abuse Registry in Ontario.

She says she is looking to make a change within the justice system in helping victims and feels publicizing the abusers can help those dealing with such stressful situations.

Not only would it reduce the risk of someone entering a relationship, she explains, but someone convicted of domestic violence will have that information publicly available.

Newton believes it would also help encourage victims to speak up and may prevent further abuse.

Newton adds she has been in touch with Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Mike Mantha to assist her with the petition.
