71 spots at Northern Ontario School of Medicine University

Now that the government has officially designated the Northern Ontario School of Medicine as a university, the province has also added positions to the school’s intake of 64 students.

Premier Ford made the announcement of 160 undergrads and 295 post-graduate new positions for all of Ontario’s medical schools at a news conference this week, the first expansion in over ten years.

Northern school CEO, Dean Dr. Sarita Verma says they are delighted and will have a huge impact on health care and the number of physicians in the North.

She adds the normal cohort of 64 undergrad positions will rise to 94 positions and the 62 residency positions in postgraduate training will mean an additional 41 positions bringing the total to 103.

Dr. Verma adds the work will now begin to find more learning spaces and professors to accommodate the new numbers.
