Repairs underway on the Big Canoe

The Chi-Cheemaun is being repaired following a fire that caused extensive damage at the shipyard in Thunder Bay on Saturday.

According to the press release, the Thunder Bay Fire Department responded to an alarm at the Heddle shipyard shortly after 2 am in the morning.

Officials say the vessel was undergoing winter maintenance when a fire broke out inside the boiler room on the ship.

There was extensive damage to one of the ship’s boilers and electrical system and the cause is under investigation.
