More than $5 million for agriculture, aquaculture and food processing sectors

Several local area businesses will be receiving a shot in the arm thanks to funding from the provincial government.

Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry, Greg Rickford made the announcement yesterday that $5 million will be distributed to 25 projects through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

Locally, $754,775 is going to Little Current’s Manitoulin Trout Farms Incorporated to purchase new cages and nets agriculture and expand aquaculture projects.

Oshadenah Holsteins, a dairy farm located in Tehkummah is receiving $250,744 to purchase equipment, build a new barn and construct a manure storage pit.

Gorham Farms is receiving $114,530 to establish their operation in McKerrow focusing on poultry and beef production.

Rickford adds that funding is a vital part of providing access to healthy food options and cultivating business development, diversification and prosperity in the food industry across the Northeast.
