The RUSSIA-UKRAINE REPORT
A massive convoy of reinforcements, including tanks and artillery, continues to slowly assemble near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv today, as Russia changes tactics in its week-old war against its neighbour.
Analysts say Russia now seems to be preparing for a siege of Ukraine’s main cities, having failed to win a quick victory.
Artillery and rocket fire is landing on Kyiv and the city of Kharkiv in the northeast, close to the Russian border.
Russia says it’s captured its first major city, Kherson, in the south.
Ukrainian officials deny the claim, but admit the city is surrounded.
U-S President Joe Biden says Russian President Vladimir Putin has “no idea” what’s coming.
Biden promised more sanctions in his state of the union speech last night, beginning with the banning of Russian aircraft from American airspace.
He’s also planning to seize the property of super-rich Russians.
Our Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, is also promising more penalties in the coming days, to choke off Russia’s capability to wage war.
Freeland says President Putin is an “international pariah,” adding his government has become a “failing kleptocracy.”
More graves found at a former residential school site
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the country stands with Canada’s indigenous peoples, after reports of dozens more graves discovered at the site of a former residential school.
The Kapawe’no First Nation, in northwestern Alberta, says a survey has found evidence of at least 169 graves at the location.
Chief Sydney Halcrow says the discovery of one body is too much, adding this number is incomprehensible.
He says each victim was a loved member of a family, but no one has been held accountable for their deaths.
