Local OPP warn public of MTO validation tag scam

The MTO validation tag scam is popping up on computers throughout the local area.

The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police is telling those who have received texts or emails about a refund for a vehicle tag, it is likely a scam where the scammers want personal banking or other information.

OPP Constable Phil Young says the fake email tells potential victims to click on a link to claim their refund, but the Ministry of Transportation does not send texts or emails to the public.

The scam popped up on the net after Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced motorists would be getting a refund for the validation tags, which will no longer be required for vehicle owners.

He says the government will send refunds directly to motorists through legal information provided on their ownership or licences adding no one should give out personal information to anyone online or over the phone.
