Mayor apologizes for grandson’s social media post

Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers Mayor Les Gamble has apologized to Indigenous people for social media videos, which young adults posted and upset many people with its racial overtones.

Gamble addressed the videos during a town council meeting on Wednesday admitting his grandson was among the young people who made the videos.

He adds his grandson went to Sagamok-Anishnawbek First Nation to present and read a letter of apology.

The video showed a young man dancing to drum music draped in an Every Child Matters flag with friends egging him on.

Councillor Kevin Burke also submitted a resolution stating council acknowledges there is a great need for reconciliation and that from acknowledgement and understanding comes fellowship with Indigenous neighbours.

The resolution was unanimously passed.
