Going off-trail concerns snowmobile club

The Espanola Snowmobile Club focused on riders going off-trail as part of their meeting last night.

Bob Towns says Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club trails are formed because of local clubs approaching landowners for permission to cross their property with a snowmobile trail.

He says the written land use agreement is for access on the specific groomed trail and nothing else and the moment riders leave the trail, they are trespassing.

He adds there are also legal liability issues involved.

Towns says recently a trail was shut down and now there is no access Apsey Lake in Espanola from the north side of the trail near the local ski hill.

The club is hoping to offer more education and an increase in trail patrols to ensure riders are following the law.
