Anyone who drives between Birch Island and the Swing Bridge at Little Current knows how rough the stretch of Highway Six is, but that is about to change.
Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Mayor Al MacNevin says he talked to Caroline Mulroney, the Minister of Transportation at the ROMA conference and confirmation has now been received that the highway will be resurfaced over the next year.
MTO communications coordinator with northeastern operations Jaclyn Lytle has confirmed construction is planned for Highway 6 from Little Current to Whitefish River First Nation this Spring.
She says the work includes paving and culvert replacements for some 16 kilometres of Highway Six and a new intersection at Birch Island will also be added.
Lytle adds the project is estimated to cost $10-million, and it is anticipated the work will be completed by the fall of next year.
