The pandemic caused quite a few delays, but proponents are optimistic about breaking ground for a new airport terminal on Manitoulin Island.
According to Northern Ontario Business, airport manager Robert Colwell says the design of the new terminal building at the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport is in the final stages.
He is optimistic the $4.2-million project will break ground this Spring.
Announced two years ago, the project includes constructing a new terminal building and helipad, widening a second runway and upgrading the infrastructure and electrical systems.
The project is receiving just over $3.9 million from the federal and provincial governments with local governments sharing the rest of the cost.
Colwell says a Sudbury design firm is in the process of completing the design now that the geotechnical and survey work has been completed.
