OPP investigate fatal collision on Highway 17

A Bruce Mines man is dead following a vehicle collision on Highway 17 near Sand River.

Superior East OPP Constable Trevor Tremblay says the investigation revealed a northbound sport utility vehicle struck a northbound plow truck.

He says the driver of the SUV, 76-year-old Douglas Hunt of Bruce Mines, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Tremblay says the collision occurred on Tuesday afternoon just before 4 PM.

The investigation is ongoing.

Two charged in connection with Elliot Lake robbery

East Algoma OPP has arrested a man and a woman in connection to a robbery at an Elliot Lake business.

Constable Phil Young says Tuesday evening officers arrested two people in connection to a break & enter that occurred at a business on Paris Street in Elliot Lake the night before.

He says suspects allegedly forced their way in, removed a cash box and stole a safe.

Young adds officers seized the vehicle used to move the stolen property and executed a search warrant.

Young says a 33-year-old man from Elliot Lake has been charged with possession of stolen property, theft and breach.

He adds a 30-year-old woman, also from Elliot Lake, has been charged with possession of stolen property and theft.

Young says the two are to appear in Elliot Lake court on March 1st.

Cyber investigation leads to criminal harassment charge

A Henvey Inlet First Nation man is facing a criminal harassment charge.

Manitoulin OPP Constable Tessa Kasch says on Tuesday they arrested a man following a cyber investigation that took nearly a year to complete.

She says in late February of last year, police began an investigation into a cyber-related harassment complaint.

She says the accused had allegedly created an Instagram account which they used to send explicit and harassing messages to other people using a fictitious profile.

Kasch says a 23-year-old from Henvey Inlet First Nation has been charged with criminal harassment and is to appear in Espanola court March 7th.

Ditching a car ends with impaired charge

A 60-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with impaired after she was pulled out of the ditch.

Constable Tessa Kasch says the detachment was called about a vehicle that had been towed out of a ditch on Hayward Street in Little Current around ten am yesterday.

She says concerns were expressed about the driver, so officers stopped the vehicle on Hardbargain Road. Police say the driver was showing signs of impairment. An approved screening device was administered which resulted in a fail.

Kasch says a 60-year-old woman from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with impaired driving and blowing over.

The accused is to appear in Gore Bay court on February 23rd.
