Renovations at Mindemoya hospital site leads to some changes

The renovation and expansion at the Mindemoya Emergency Department on Manitoulin Island is coming along with the anticipated completion later this year.

According to Julia Fedec, Clinical Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department and Chemotherapy Program, they are excited to see the progress but maintaining access has been a challenge.

She says they are required to work through multiple phases of building including construction vehicles in and around the site, some delays in traffic, and a considerable amount of noise.

She says anyone visiting the department should bring along headphones and be patient with staff and the commotion construction can cause.

The retrofit will increase the department by 1,700 square feet allowing an efficient workspace and more privacy for patients while meeting accreditation standards for care.

She adds this spring, the public can anticipate seeing spaces starting to shift within the department.

This will include placement of the nursing stations and changes to some of the patient rooms.
