Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission reviewing Blind River Cameco licence renewal

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is reviewing Blind River’s Cameco operations application for licence renewal.

Mississauga First Nation, North Watch and some individuals expressed concerns of their own at the hearing held by the commission last Wednesday.

Mississauga First Nation wants to play more of a role with more frequent interaction with the refinery, which produces some 18,000 tons of uranium concentrate a year to create Uranium Trioxide (UO3), also known as yellowcake powder, which is then shipped to another Cameco facility in Port Hope in preparation for use in nuclear reactors.

First Nation proponents would like to see a licence renewal process every five years, rather than the standard ten that has been in place since the operation opened in 1983.

The commission will now review the submissions and a decision on the final licencing renewal is expected in the New Year.

Cameco was granted a 10-year Class 1B operating licence that expires on February 28, 2022.
