Elliot Lake council cancels city ice fishing derby for another year

Elliot Lake council made the decision to cancel the annual ice fishing derby for another year due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Council held an in-depth discussion on whether to go ahead with the ice derby held on Horne Lake every February at its last virtual meeting with some councillors expressing concerns about the rapidly changing landscape of COVID.

It was suggested that the ice derby be limited to just locals, but with its popularity over the years, the possibility of having people travel into the city for the derby was an overriding concern.

In the end, council decided to err on the side of caution and cancel the event once again, which was to be held on February 19th, 2022.
