Costs of demolishing Blind River courthouse double the budget

The pandemic and flooding of the Blind River courthouse have not been kind leading to its demolishment, but the cost is much higher than council expected.

The municipality owns the building.

Treasurer Sue Dent says it was heavily damaged by flooding just before the pandemic leading to its closure.

Council had decided to demolish the building at a cost of around $300,000, but Dent says the town office only received one tender quote at double the cost, nearly $600,000.

She adds the town is in the process of also selling or donating furniture that has been salvaged from the building.

CAO-Clerk Katie Scott suggested to council they either re-issue the tender or split up the work with the town doing some of the demolition.

Council is now reviewing the options and is expected to decide soon.
