Miners rescue well underway at Totten Mine

Thirty-nine miners are climbing to the surface this morning, after being stuck underground in a mine at Totten Mine in Worthington for almost two days.

They were trapped after efforts to move a piece of mine equipment damaged the elevator used to transport them into and out of the depths.

The workers had access to food, water, and medicine at various “safe rooms” in the mine.

Several of the miners have already made the long climb out, using a backup system of ladders.

They’re being assisted by special rescue teams sent down to help them.

An update from Vale, the company, is expected later this morning.
