Pomp and ceremony marks 100th anniversary of Manitoulin Island war memorial

Bagpipes, a 21-gun salute and the Last Post were all part of a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the Manitoulin Island war memorial.

On Sept. 15th, 1921, the first Manitoulin Island District Cenotaph was unveiled and now the Manitoulin Veteran’s Memorial Gardens have become the centerpiece of remembrance for those who have and who are serving.

Sunday’s ceremony included the Central Manitoulin Public School Children’s Choir singing O Canada and God Save The Queen and Willow Fogal laying a wreath on behalf of all the Children of the World at the Youth Memorial.

There was also a presentation by the Sudbury & District Pipe Band, a 21- gun salute by the Sgt. Charles A. Golden Silver Star Rifle Team and Last Post rendition by long-time veteran Roy Eaton.

Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing NDP candidate Carol Hughes, Algoma Manitoulin MPP Mike Mantha, Royal Canadian Legion President Branch 177, Ruth and Kathleen Eshikibok all laid wreaths in honour of the fallen.
