No charges for OPP in man’s death on Manitoulin Island

The Special Investigations Unit has found no reasonable grounds to believe that an Ontario Provincial Police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with a 43-year-old man’s death on Manitoulin Island.

The organization’s director,.Joseph Martino, says on November 28th, 2020, OPP responded to a home in Sucker Creek where a man had armed himself with a rifle during a domestic dispute with his partner and her son.

He says a trained negotiator was brought in and made multiple attempts to reach the man but officers found he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head when they entered the house.

Martino says he the subject officer and other responding officers acted with due care for the man’s health and welfare throughout the police operation despite being unable to prevent him from taking his own life.
