Optometrists rejecting OHIP-covered eye exams, citing government underfunding

If you are looking to have an eye exam and get new glasses or contacts, you may be put on a waiting list.
Optometrists in Ontario, including local offices, have stopped conducting eye exams covered by provincial health insurance.
Dr. Sheldon Salaba, the president of the Ontario Association of Optometrists says “years of underfunding” have left its members feeling they have no choice but to withdraw the services unless the province agrees to legally binding negotiations.
Even those who are willing to pay cash, will not be seen, according to one Espanola optometrist, if they are on the OHIP list since that would be considered illegal.
Anyone who calls in for an OHIP-based appointment will be put on a waiting list until the issue is resolved.
The provincial plan covers one annual major eye exam for residents aged 19 and younger, 65 and older, and those with specific medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus and glaucoma.
