Water main shutdown in Elliot Lake

Some residents have been without water since yesterday after an Elliot Lake Public Works crew located an emergency water main break along Highway 108 in the Oakland Boulevard area

City projects director Steve Antunes says the leak was identified on the large water main that feeds the new sub-area of the city along Highway 108.

He says the crew began work on the repairs yesterday afternoon and it is hoped the work will be completed by late in the day today.

Antunes adds the work will also cause discolouration of drinking water in all areas along Hillside Drive North and the Pearson Drive area.

He adds some residents or businesses have received a boil water advisory as a result – more specific information follows …

Repair of the break involves isolating a section of the main, where it will be drained of water to allow the crew to clamp the hole in the pipe.  This process will likely cause discolouration of the drinking water in all areas along Hillside Drive North and surrounding neighbourhoods, as well as along Pearson Drive and sounding areas, where water will be forced through the pipes at a higher velocity to help feed the new sub-area.  Residents may also experience pressure issues and are asked to be patient during the repair process.  Residents are also asked to refrain from using hot water during the hours of the repair, to help prevent drawing in any sediments into their hot water tank.  If residents should experience any discolouration of their drinking water, they are asked to please run their cold water until it clears.

The residents or businesses that will be put on a boil water advisory will have letters dropped off directly to them.  If you do not receive a letter, you are not on a boil water advisory.
