An inquest into the death of a worker at a Sudbury construction site has been ruled accidental.
Carl Peltier of Wiikwemkoong was working for ProSteel North at a private residential construction site in Chelmsford when the incident occurred.
He was fatally injured, and another worker wounded when the roof trusses they were installing collapsed in 2017.
Peltier was trapped between two trusses and other workers tried to assist but were unable to lift the trusses.
A boom truck was used to lift them and 911 was called, but Peltier was pronounced deceased on arrival at the hospital.
The coroner’s jury made four recommendations outlining training and safety improvements on worksites where roof trusses are being installed.
RECOMMENDATIONS
That the provincial government and the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development make a concerted effort to reach out to small construction crews (1 to 5 workers) to assist their employees with their personal obligations to promote safety as laid out in the OHSA and its regulations.
The second is that the provincial government and the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development explore the creation of training modules for supervisors and crew members involved in the erection of trusses under OHSA and its regulations.
The jury also recommended that the provincial government and the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development continue to explore making the complexity of the project instead of the dollar value of the project the prerequisite for the requirement to file a Notice of Project under Section 5 of the Construction Regulation under the OHSA.
The jury also recommended that Professional Engineers Ontario should consider providing specific installation/bracing guidelines with the engineered drawings in regards to the installation of trusses.
