Outbreak on Manitoulin Island First Nation

An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared by a Manitoulin Island First Nation.

Chief Duke Peltier of Wiikwemkoong says the local pandemic team has informed them that an outbreak has been declared since there are two or more confirmed cases in more than one cluster.

Peltier adds they are advising members there are to be no gatherings and strongly encourages everyone to stay in their household bubble.

He says the Wiikwemkoong Administration building was also decontaminated and reopened yesterday.

Peltier says there will be COVID-19 testing offered as a drive-through at the local arena today as well as tomorrow at the Blue Med Tent located outside the band office.

Public Health Sudbury & Districts says there seven active cases within its jurisdiction with the two new cases from the Manitoulin District.

Anyone who has concerns or wanting more information can contact the local crisis team at 705-348-1937.

Meanwhile, given that Ontario is in Step Three and the 21 days is up today, both the Sudbury-Manitoulin and Algoma health units are changing up their vaccination delivery.

Sudbury & District Public Health nurse, Natalie Philippe says 80.8 percent of those 12 years of age and older have had their first dose while 70.7 percent have received their second, reaching the thresholds the province has set.

Leonardo Vecchio of the Algoma unit says they have 81.9 % of residents 12 and over have received their first dose and 72.6% are fully vaccinated, also exceeding the provincial requirements.

Both spokespersons say mass clinics are ending, but mobile units, walk-in clinics and pop-ups will be held in various communities within the three districts throughout the fall.
